Position Overview

Our client brings decades of experience with building and operating utility infrastructure in Alberta. They are establishing a new business entity to support the demands of rural Alberta’s broadband internet services. This exciting new initiative will enable rural and regional communities to build broadband infrastructure in their communities and ensure modern broadband services are offered without the community having to operate the infrastructure or become broadband specialists.

Our client aims to provide Alberta communities with a means to ensure that modern broadband services are available to the citizens and businesses within their communities. Outside of major metropolitan centres, rural and regional communities are drastically underserved by existing telecommunication companies and internet service providers. Our client will be specifically structured to address the needs and challenges of rural and regional communities.

Our client is seeking a Vice President, Operations to help lead the launch and growth of the organization.

The Opportunity

As a member of the Executive Team and reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Vice President, Operations is accountable for the day-to-day operations and performance of the business. This includes working with the CEO to set, measure and execute goals and strategies. This role is also accountable for developing safe work practices, attracting new opportunities, partnerships, investors, and alliances through effective relationship and business development, and the safe ongoing operations to procure, install and maintain the necessary broadband infrastructure to meet the communities’ needs.


  • The Vice President, Operations will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
    • Demonstrate exceptional leadership to create an organization that motivates employees by connecting organizational goals to employees’ values and communicates in a way that employees are inspired to fulfill the organization’s mission.
    • Collaborate with other members of the Executive Team to develop the strategies and plans to create and maintain a highly effective organization that meets employees’ and stakeholders’ expectations.
    • Develop annual budgets for the organization including staffing, equipment, new construction, annual planned projects, inventory management and business development.
    • Ensure effective development of new standards and work practices that are consistently applied across the organization.
    • Develop a Business Development strategy that supports new business opportunities, partnerships, investors, and alliances and participate in building external stakeholder relationships on behalf of the organization.
    • Oversee the development of the organization’s systems plan that defines an accurate path forward for the development of infrastructure to meet the needs of current and prospective community members.
    • Ensure that new initiatives are effectively rolled out in a timely and coordinated manner so that disruption is minimized.
    • Develop a highly effective Operations team that is focused on the needs of prospective and existing community members.
    • Ensure that all resources (staff/contractors, equipment, inventory facilities and budgets dollars) are managed prudently and are deployed in a manner that provides the greatest return on investment.

Candidate Profile

  • As the ideal candidate, your background includes:
    • a degree in business or a related discipline, or equivalent combined experience;
    • MBA would be considered an asset;
    • a minimum of five years of leadership experience in operations and business development;
    • proven experience developing, implementing and sustaining an operational strategy from the ground up;
    • demonstrated ability to meet or exceed P&L expectations of a growing business;
    • experience in the broadband internet, construction, electrical, and/or utilities industry;
    • experience with supply chain management would be considered an asset;
    • demonstrated strong leadership capabilities with a track record of coaching and mentoring employees; and,
    • the ability to lead, through others, an organization that is in several geographic locations.
