Managing Access and Privacy in Saskatchewan: Advanced Course

Cenera is pleased to present a new, advanced expert-led workshop focused on establishing, operating and maintaining an information governance program for compliance with Saskatchewan access and privacy legislation, including:

  • Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (provincial government)
  • Local Authorities Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (local public bodies)
  • Health Information Protection Act (health providers)
  • Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (private sector)
  • General Data Protection Regulation (international commerce)

The course will cover program requirements, strategies, organization and methodology on every aspect of information access, privacy and security management: policy, roles and authorities; collection, use and disclosure strategies and tools; access request processes and methods; assessment and quality assurance standards and methods; preventive and risk management tracking and response; information governance approaches and collaboration; organizational awareness and training; regulator processes and relations. The goal is to equip participants with knowledge and strategies to implement access and privacy in a way that:

  • provides the best outcome for all parties;
  • takes less time and resources; and
  • supports and builds trust between your organization and the community you serves.

These are some of the questions we will discuss and answers:

  • What is a good access and privacy policy and what role does it play?
  • What roles and responsibilities need to be assigned within my organization? Who should do what?
  • How do I handle third-party service providers and partners?
  • Do I need to educate and engage leadership, staff and elected officials in my program?
  • How do I leverage IT and records management systems and resources?
  • What is an open government initiative? What are the advantages for my access and privacy program?
  • What is a Privacy Impact Assessment and how can use it in my program?
  • What does the Information and Privacy Commissioner expect from me? How do I handle a complaint or inquiry to the Commissioner?

Course Format

This full-day workshop will be presented live on-line. The course will be highly interactive, making use of remote platform features that include screen sharing, messaging tools, polling/quiz questions and break-out rooms. Participants will be engaged mainly in working through real life, topical situations and problems, facilitated by seasoned and expert course leaders with decades of access and privacy program and training experience. Resources made available to participants before the course serve as reference documents for FOIP/LA FOIP access, privacy and security requirements both during and after the course.

Who should participate?

Besides FOIP/LA FOIP Coordinators and Information and Privacy Officers, this course is relevant to the work of a wide range of provincial, municipal, school, university, health, private sector and non-profit leaders and officials, including elected officers, department managers, communications staff, legal or regulatory officers, information managers, IT security, and any staff managing an information-intensive program.

Participants should have basic knowledge of the access and privacy legislation requirements applicable to their organization provided in relevant provincial Access to Information and Privacy Protection Online Training course, private sector privacy course, or equivalents.

About the Instructors

Joan Dunlop, BA, LLB, CIAPP/M has been a FOIP/LA FOIP analyst with a major police service and now works with a wide range of provincial and local government bodies as a FOIP/LA FOIP consultant and expert in Alberta and Saskatchewan, assessing and developing access and privacy programs, providing program support, and leading FOIP/LA FOIP training sessions.

Rick Klumpenhouwer, MA, MAS, CIAPP/M brings over 15 years of experience as a FOIP/LA FOIP Director in a major health region, and as a FOIP/LA FOIP expert consultant, educator, and speaker, for governments, businesses, and non-profit organizations in Saskatchewan, across Canada and internationally.

Kayla Oishi, BA, CIAPP/C has spent almost 10 years working with the three access and privacy laws of Saskatchewan in both provincial and municipal government. As a Consultant with Cenera, Kayla assists in delivering Privacy and Access Training in Saskatchewan.
